چکیده

The exercise performance of thoroughbred racing horses is affected by factors such as body weight, muscle type, and nutrition . Carnosine (β-alanyl histidine), a small and water-soluble dipeptide, in the muscle is a factor that contributes to the exercise performance of animals . This peptide and its analogues anserine (1-methyl-carnosine) are present in the skeletal muscles and nervous tissues of many vertebrates . The concentration of carnosine in the muscles is high. It is one of the most abundant small-molecule compounds in skeletal muscles, with concentrations similar to those of creatine and ATP. During high intensity exercise, muscle contractions lead to the production of lactic acid, and the resulting acidosis causes muscle contractile fatigue. Owing to the alkaline property of carnosine (pKa = 7.01), it is thought to play a significant role in intracellular buffering and maintaining the pH balance in muscle . In addition to pH buffering, carnosine reportedly has many beneficial characteristics such as anti-oxidant, anti-glycation, and anti-crosslink activities . Considering these characteristics, the concentration of muscle carnosine is thought to have a posit ive relationship with exercise performance 2, . Indeed, high concentrations of muscle carnosine have been found in

Frequency of Limb Injuries Between Thoroughbred and Arabian Horses

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between race horse breed and the frequency of limb injuries through the time of training and racing. The study population consisted of 4042 Thoroughbred and 2553 Arabian horses raced at Warsaw race Track, from 2000 to 2008. Among these horses, 94 Thoroughbreds and 32 Arabians had different limb injuries. Based on the achieved results, it is possi...

Mitochondrial function and aerobic capacity assessed by high resolution respirometry in Thoroughbred horses

During the initial stages of training of young Thoroughbred horses, low intensity exercise is employed to increase aerobic capacity. High Resolution Respirometry (HRR) allows the determination of aerobic capacities in small samples of permeabilised muscle fibres. The aim of the study was to measure the mitochondrial function by HRR in Thoroughbred horses, to compare these values to Warmblood ho...

Common injuries in athletic horses at riding clubs in Tehran, Iran

Various forms of intensive sport place stress on the musculoskeletal system of the horse, during both racing and training. The musculoskeletal system of the horse has an inherent ability to adapt to the demands of high speed exercise, but exceeding the threshold of adaptive capacity may result in some form of damage. Continuing racing or training may delay the repair process and put the horse a...
